New Year: What’s different in my life?

A little less than thirty days ago, you told your husband or wife, boyfriend or girlfriend, your family and friends that you were going to make a New Year resolution. By midnight on December 31, you committed to workout, find a new job, enrich your personal relationships, travel somewhere exotic ...or stop drinking or smoking, to name a few. Are you kidding yourself? Ask yourself …what’s different in my life?

Every year everyone begins their soul searching in December to discover one to two changes in time for the upcoming year. Many of us think about our relationships. If we are in a relationship, we want a better relationship or to be a better partner. If we are not in a relationship, then we hope, and sometimes pray that the ONE will enter our lives in the New Year. Some wish for the relationship that they are in will end. If a relationship was not your focus, maybe it was a better you. Did you commit to joining a church or a gym, or going to the gym more often? Did you decide that you would travel somewhere internationally? Did you commit to becoming a mentor to a youth?
All of these are great examples of New Year’s resolutions, but what are you actively doing to fulfill your new year’s commitment?

For some like Justin Gutzmer, 40, a New Year’s resolution is nothing more than desires, and when we fail to focus on the desire we’re experienced over the holiday, we fall short of fulfilling our resolution. Thus he no longer makes “New Year’s Resolutions”. Justin says he simply makes it a point to carry out whatever goals, long or short, come to mind. Kori Williams, 40, says her New Year’s resolution was to find an exercise regimen that she would commit to. She believes that most people make New Year’s resolutions with good intentions, but fail to keep them.

In eleven months, it will seem as though in a blink of any eye another year will have by-passed us. Let us all revisit our New Year resolutions or short-term goals and make them happen. Stop reading this article, get out your blackberry or I-phone and make an appointment with yourself to achieve your New Year resolution or short-term goals. There should not be another year where you settle on doing the same thing next year. Book your trip, join the gym, find a church home, get out of the house and meet new people. Do it today! Following thru will give you an added sense of self-worth and achievement.

SO let your actions today be the difference that you will see in your life for the rest of the year.

There was a new featured exhibit at the world’s largest aquarium. Atlanta Falcon and former University of Georgia quarterback, DJ Shockley portrayed his undying commitment and love to the former Portia Phillips.

After meeting in high school, DJ and Portia knew early on that they were destined to be together forever. He continued to throw touchdowns playing as the key quarterback for University of Georgia and she continued to pursue her education and passion for working with disabled children. ‘Twas the night before Christmas at Centennial Olympic Park, DJ completed a pass for a touchdown that would change his life for the better, he asked Portia Phillips to marry him.

The excitement of sharing a new life together meant the planning had to begin immediately. To bring their dream to life, the couple chose the elite services of Kenisha White, President of The Genesis Concept. Kenisha White helped bring together their vision, needs and wants by leading them to The Georgia Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the world, for the largest event of their lives.

The GA Aquarium provided first class service from the beginning to the end. The atmosphere of the venue gave an exotic feel and tropical flair for the evening. The ceremony began promptly at 6:30 pm, before 350 guests ranging from professional athletes such as Matt Ryan, DeAngelo Hall, Quentin Moses and Thomas Davis to Georgia Bulldogs coaches Mark Richt and Rodney Gardner; and many more professionals, family and friends.

An ecstatic bride, Portia wore a Lazarro, pearl white, a-line style dress covered in Swarvoski crystals with her bridesmaids standing with her dressed in orchid and silver. The guys lined the stage wearing classic black tuxedos. Overjoyed to be newlywed Mr. & Mrs. DJ Shockley the couple recessed to continue the celebration with family and friends at the reception.

Celebrity photographer, Korey Akinbami and videographers of Visual Statements Photography & Video were on site to cover this event of the year. The ballroom was set and ready to receive the guests, although many were not aware that they would be partying with the fish of the GA Aquarium. The guests were further astounded by the beautiful room designed with silver linen, orchid lighting, manzanita trees with hanging crystals, arrangements filled with orchids and roses, a huge dance floor in front of the Beluga tank and the highlight of the evening, the photo booth provided by WOW Photo.

After being served an array of appetizers and hors d’ oeuvres during the pre-reception cocktail, guests were presented with buffet stations of both Southern and New Orleans cuisine by Wolf Gang Puck Catering. The stations included Georgia baby shrimp with apple wood smoked bacon and cheddar cheese grits, slow braised short ribs, grilled asparagus, Cajun seafood pasta, blackened salmon, classic jambalaya, and Caesar salad.

With such fun and spirited personalities, the couple immediately got the party started by dancing to the tune of ‘Always’, played by Atlanta’s own V103, DJ Cowboy. And of course it would not have been a party without paying tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

In the beginning: Ashley, a Birmingham native, had just finished law school when she moved to Nashville in May 2007. Over lunch, a friend asked Ashley if she was dating anyone. Ashley said no, and the friend later said she had the perfect person for Ashley. The friend gave Ashley's e-mail address to Memphis native Junaid, who invited Ashley to meet over coffee. They met at Starbucks on Sept. 24, 2007. "He just made a really great first im pression," Ashley said. "I remember thinking he's as awesome as (my friend) said he was."

First date: They went to J. Alexander's and then to MaggieMoo's for ice cream on Sept. 29, 2007. "Once we saw the date was going really well, he said, 'Hey, you want to grab some ice cream?'" Ashley said.

First kiss: It happened Oct. 27, 2007, following a date. Junaid walked Ashley to her front door and asked her if she would slap him if he kissed her. She thought he was such a gentleman for asking and told him a kiss would be fine.

Will you? Junaid wanted to surprise Ashley with a proposal. But, he knew if he took her to a fancy dinner or did something unusual, she would suspect something. After a few weeks of deliberation, he drove to Birmingham on Nov. 20, 2008, and asked her parents for her hand in marriage. He then asked them to help him surprise her. He returned to Birmingham on Nov. 24, 2008, unannounced. When he rang her parents' door bell, Ashley's mother persuaded Ashley to answer the door. Ashley, who was still in her pajamas, thought it was a neighbor returning Ashley's mother's Tupperware. When Ashley opened the door, she saw Junaid holding a ring and getting down on one knee. "I was so shocked. I screamed, 'Yes! Yes!'," she said.

The wedding: They exchanged vows at South Highland Presbyterian Church in Birmingham.

Traditions: A flower that was once on Ashley's mother's wedding gown, was stitched into the lining of Ashley's new gown; a satin bow from Ashley's late maternal grandmother was sewn atop Ashley's mother's flower; Ashley's wedding dress and accessories were new; and a blue button was sewn into her dress for the bustle.

Reception: Ashley and Junaid each took center stage during the reception at The Club. Ashley's Delta Sigma Theta Sorority sisters surrounded her and serenaded her. Earlier, the band called Ashley and her bridesmaids to the dance floor, and had the women encircle Junaid as the band sang, "You the Man." It was a surprise to everyone.

Show stoppers: The ring bearers ruled the dance floor with their Michael Jackson moves. Also, Ashley wore hot pink pumps. "Hot pink is really my favorite color. I wanted to stand out," she said.

Multiples: They received several four-piece place set tings of their everyday china.

Honeymoon: They spent a week in Paris, France.

Pedigree: Ashley's parents are Willie and Ronda McCall of Birmingham. Junaid's parents are Larry and Deloris Yates of Memphis.

Happily ever after: Ashley, 27, and Junaid, 30, are attorneys and live in Nashville.

Meant to be: Ashley was still in law school at Louisiana State University in September 2006 when she decided she'd move to Nashville after graduation. A few months later, her mother told her she would find her future husband there. As a sign of faith, Ashley confessed the thought daily to God. After meeting Junaid in Nashville, the two later realized they had been going to the same church, at the same time, but had never seen each other. "God ordered our steps so that we could come together as one," Ashley said. "Through our whole relationship and how we were introduced by a mutual friend, I learned that you never know who God will use to bless you."

Our Story

Richard is a management consulting executive and Nikeitra is a meeting planner. Who both worked for INROADS and knew each other for years before we ever even had a real conversation. They finally talked at a staff conference in Dallas and continued to stay in contact afterwards and as they say, the rest is history...

Her Side

Richard and I knew each other for years and the extent of our conversation was "Hi" and "Good-bye." We saw each other again at a staff conference in Dallas. I arrived late because I was ill and he was one of the first people that I saw in the hotel lobby. During our first general session, Richard jokingly (or maybe not ;-)) asked for my phone number so that he could text me and keep me awake. Over the course of the next few days, we had an opportunity to have a few conversations. Richard is a very nice guy and I knew that I wanted us to maintain contact. As fate would have it, shortly thereafter, Richard left the company and made plans to move to Atlanta. Needless to say, I was totally excited; I had fallen in love with him! Richard is my soul mate and I know that we were destined to be together.

The Story of How We Me

Nikeitra and I met while working at the same company a few years ago but never really had much conversation. Upon reflection it seems that we both thought that the other one was attractive but as the story goes - timing is everything. A few years passed and there was another staff conference but this time we met in the lobby and the sparks flew! You see I have always been a sucker for a beautiful smile and an open personality and Nikeitra has these in spades. As the conference progressed, we exchanged numbers and began texting one another. Innocently enough at first but as time passed it became apparent to me that my feelings for her had grown and in fact I was in love from the first moment I saw her.

The very first time Antwyne and I saw each other was in 1989. I had just graduated from high school working my first job at Piggly Wiggly grocery store. He had come to the store with a friend to see his girlfriend. I worked as a cashier. As I was ringing up groceries Antwyne stood there watching me while he waited on his friend. I could see him out of my peripheral vision. He picked up a snickerbar and started to walk toward my register to purchase it. The closer he got to the register the more scared he was. He expressed it as “getting weak in the knees” so he put the candy bar down and walked out.

He told his friend that he had just seen the most beautiful woman in the world, and how he regreted not saying anything to me. He told his friend that he probably would never see me again, and if he did he was going to “throw the whole kitchen sink at me.” (A figure of speech meaning that I wouldn’t get away the next time) We met once more September 2006 at another store. We both said at the same time “hey you look familiar” we began to talk about where we may have seen each other, and believe it or not he started talking about the incident at Piggly Wiggly and we both started laughing as we are still today.

Well to make a long story short, he said, “let me give you my cell number”. Then he wanted to vent about what he was going through at the time, and I said, “Well I’ll probably see you around. But, I could empathize with him because I was going through a similar situation too. The next year 2007 we became best friends. “Real close friends”, and we knew very soon we were going to become as ONE!

Finally 20 years later, September 26, 2009 in Palm Coast Florida on the Sundancer Yacht, we had been redeemed, we were rescued. I became Mrs. John Antywne Harris. My baby made my dreams come true. I had the most beautiful wedding a bride could have. Click here to see our Wedding Photographs

From The Eyes of the Bride.

The day I met Geoff I knew something amazing was going to happen. When Geoff proposed to me on his birthday I was so excited to plan our wedding. As an event planner I knew exactly what I wanted and how I wanted it done. I had big dreams, huge plans and little time. Despite the advice of my family and friends I wanted to do everything myself. Yes, everything! Even my cake. Luckily, I don't know much about great photography so I called on Visual Statements Photography and Video to make my dream wedding memories beautiful and they did!

Over 90% of our 120 guests were from out of town, so I was also the travel planner. All the stress, planning and lack of sleep had not hit me, I was running on pure adrenaline. Everything was going so fast, I slipped on my dress, wrestled with my veil and then-it hit me. I'm getting married. I almost broke down before I walked down the altar. One year of planning, two hours on hair and make-up and x amount of money later I was not going to ruin this moment with tears. I am going to enjoy this moment. Besides, I did not want the "ugly cry face" in my pictures.

July 3, 2009, was the happiest day of my life. I married my best friend, the one who makes my soul smile. Seven years to the date. And each time (about 5 times a day) I look at my wedding pictures, from Visual Statements Photography and Video, I get the same feeling I felt that day. As vain as it may sound, the photos are the most important part of the day; it's the only thing that won't change with time.

The Dee von Nkosi Story in Nine Acts

Act 1: the search - 3,000 miles

In 2007, Dee and von were two mature hearts in search of a lasting love. Both of them having experienced long term relationships had a clear sense of the type of person they were looking for. With 3000 miles between them, two souls threw caution to the wind and embarked on a journey to find love.

Act 2: the find

Dee spent a lifetime in Los Angeles and von nearly the last 30 of his in Atlanta. They knew "the one" was somewhere in the world but where? They both embraced 21st century technology to assist them in their search to find love.

In October 2006, Dee joined eHarmony and von did the same in February 2007. Between February and May, von received nearly 2,000 profiles. When Dee first joined, she set her profile up to only receive matches within the state of California and neighboring states. In April, Dee decided to change her profile to include all of North America. Having lived in Los Angeles all her life, and always desiring to live in another state, she thought, maybe “the one” is not local.”

In May, eHarmony matched von and Dee. When Dee’s profile arrived in von’s box, it was an OMG moment for him. She was beautiful, her profile was breezy and von liked what she talked about. It was clear from reading her profile; she was in search of a deep “meaningful” love, exactly what he was looking for. When von landed in Dee’s box, she thought he was cute and shared his picture with several of her friends and they agreed. After reading von’s profile, her interests were peaked and she was excited when he requested communication with her.

Act 3: the dance

Dee agreed to begin guided communication with von. Over the course of about a week, von and Dee went through eHarmony’s guided communication and had their first phone call on May 29th. They spoke every night, usually for about 3 hours.

In late June, Dee and von decided to meet in a neutral city and mutually agreed on Chicago. The two hit it off as they knew they would...von picked Dee up from O'hare airport and they headed over to the W (Lakeshore) for drinks, conversation and star gazing (at each other). von thought Dee was stylish and he was diggin’ it. Dee thought von was even cuter in person than in his pictures and his critical thinking nature was a turn on. The two enjoyed the Windy City and meeting in Chi-town would turn out to be the 1st of many travels.

Act 4: the relationship

Both being committed to getting to know each other, they made plans to see each other every six weeks. Over the course of their relationship, they continued their nightly "phone dates” and the more they learned about one another, the more they “liked” one another. They also realized that they were travel compatible having vacationed together in Las Vegas, Cabo San Lucas, New Orleans, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta and in October 2007…….Paris. They thoroughly enjoyed each city they visited together.

Dee and von spent the next couple/few months solidifying their relationship and after about 2 ½ months, von drafted a closing letter to eHarmony letting them know that they had matched him with a fabulous woman and he was terminating his membership to pursue an exclusive relationship with her. He received a reply asking that they keep them posted on the progress of their relationship.

When Dee and von realized that the connection was real, they were excited to make introductions to their respective family and friends. The resounding agreement was, “You two make a great couple and I’m happy for you.”

Act 5: the engagement

As 2007 was winding down, von felt the pull of love and knew that Dee was “the one” and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. He began the process of planning the engagement. Being an architect, von was a planner and designer so he wouldn't settle for any engagement ring for his future bride. He started the process of designing Dee's engagement ring. He just needed the type of stone...the diamond and the cut to work with and some visualization input from Dee. With a sketch, von had what he needed. He spent months searching for the perfect stone. In planning, von set a goal of having the engagement ring in time for their October trip to Paris so he could propose to Dee there.

After months of planning, diamond shopping, ring designing and fabrication, von picked up the ring on his birthday in September, about a month before their trip to Paris. The ring was burning a hole in his pocket and he couldn't wait until Paris to ask Dee to marry him and to present her with the ring. After conferring with some female friends, von decided that he would propose to Dee on his parent’s 47th wedding anniversary since he was scheduled to be in Los Angeles celebrating his birthday with Dee on that day. Dee had plans for them to go out to dinner anyway...it was perfect; she wouldn't suspect a thing. One thing von wanted was blessings from Dee’s mom. When von secretly called Dee’s mom, she was surprised and happy. She gave von her blessings.

Dee took von to an Asian themed (his favorite) restaurant named Koi. The seating had to be perfect...Dee thought von was being unusually picky. But over a desert of crème brûlée and champagne, von popped the question. Dee was totally surprised...she asked, “von, is this [the day] it?!?" von said, “yes” and pulled the ring out his pocket in the cutest little box like a mini shopping bag. Dee immediately fell in love with the very unique custom designed ring.

Dee and von took their trip to Paris the following month. It was an unforgettable post-engagement celebration trip. They stayed in a trendy boutique hotel just a few blocks from Notre Dame. They walked and ate at sidewalk Parisian cafes, did some sightseeing and shopped for antiques.

After arriving back in the United States, the next step was to set a wedding date. They decided on July 18th and spent the next 9 months preparing for their big day.

Act 6: the wedding vision

von had requested that the wedding be elegant and not chaotic. Dee’s vision was a celebration that would be small, intimate, outdoors and fun. Both Dee and von appreciate thinking outside the box and wanted their day to be a representation of their respective styles.

Act 7: the wedding day

Dee and von’s wedding day lived up to their vivid imaginations. It was beautiful. A close friend of Dee’s described the wedding as being Eco Chic. It was held on the lawn of the Admissions House of Occidental College; the college President Barack Obama attended in the early 1980s. The weather was warm and favorable. Dee wore a Lazaro gown with a birdcage veil made especially for her by her cousin. On the side of the veil were two flowers and two pucka shells. The veil was a hit.

The groom and best men wore custom made silk outfits inspired by North African fashion. The ceremony was held under a huge tree in front of 60 family members and friends. The Bride’s niece sang Whitney Houston’s song, I believe in You and Me beautifully. After the ceremony, the guests were directed about 10 feet away to a lounge area for hand held H’ors deurves. The reception was held on the patio and grass in front of the house. Guests went home with three favors (a miniature book of Dee and von’s engagement photos, a custom made Mojito lollipop and a madeline cookie. The cookies were packaged in boxes topped with a delicate handmade butterfly made by a friend of the bride.

The Bride and Groom’s first dance song, Make Me Whole by Amel Larrieux was sung live by a friend of the bride. The soloists’ voice was so beautiful, many of the guests didn’t realize that the song was being performed live.

Dee, von and the guests, topped off the night with dancing until 11:00 pm. It was a beautiful celebration of love.

Act 8: the honeymoon

The couple honeymooned in the Caribbean. They Island hopped between the British Virgin Island and US Virgin Island. They started on Virgin Gorda for one night, then took water taxis on to Tortola, St. John and St. Thomas for two nights each. They stayed at beautiful resorts with ocean views and private beaches on each island. On their honeymoon, they were able relax, have fun and enjoy each other.

Georgia Aquarium Wedding - Shockley Wedding

On June 27, 2009 there was a new featured exhibit at the world’s largest aquarium. Atlanta Falcon and former University of Georgia quarterback, DJ Shockley portrayed his undying commitment and love to the former Portia Phillips.

After meeting in high school, DJ and Portia knew early on that they were destined to be together forever. He continued to throw touchdowns playing as the key quarterback for University of Georgia and she continued to pursue her education and passion for working with disabled children. ‘Twas the night before Christmas at Centennial Olympic Park, DJ completed a pass for a touchdown that would change his life for the better, he asked Portia Phillips to marry him.

The excitement of sharing a new life together meant the planning had to begin immediately. To bring their dream to life, the couple chose the elite services of Kenisha White, President of The Genesis Concept. Kenisha White helped bring together their vision, needs and wants by leading them to The Georgia Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the world, for the largest event of their lives.

The GA Aquarium provided first class service from the beginning to the end. The atmosphere of the venue gave an exotic feel and tropical flair for the evening. The ceremony began promptly at 6:30 pm, before 350 guests ranging from professional athletes such as Matt Ryan, DeAngelo Hall, Quentin Moses and Thomas Davis to Georgia Bulldogs coaches Mark Richt and Rodney Gardner; and many more professionals, family and friends.

An ecstatic bride, Portia wore a Lazarro, pearl white, a-line style dress covered in Swarvoski crystals with her bridesmaids standing with her dressed in orchid and silver. The guys lined the stage wearing classic black tuxedos. Overjoyed to be newlywed Mr. & Mrs. DJ Shockley the couple recessed to continue the celebration with family and friends at the reception.

Celebrity photographer, Korey Akinbami and videographers of Visual Statements Photography & Video were on site to cover this event of the year. The ballroom was set and ready to receive the guests, although many were not aware that they would be partying with the fish of the GA Aquarium. The guests were further astounded by the beautiful room designed with silver linen, orchid lighting, manzanita trees with hanging crystals, arrangements filled with orchids and roses, a huge dance floor in front of the Beluga tank and the highlight of the evening, the photo booth provided by WOW Photo.

After being served an array of appetizers and hors d’ oeuvres during the pre-reception cocktail, guests were presented with buffet stations of both Southern and New Orleans cuisine by Wolf Gang Puck Catering. The stations included Georgia baby shrimp with apple wood smoked bacon and cheddar cheese grits, slow braised short ribs, grilled asparagus, Cajun seafood pasta, blackened salmon, classic jambalaya, and Caesar salad.

With such fun and spirited personalities, the couple immediately got the party started by dancing to the tune of ‘Always’, played by Atlanta’s own V103, DJ Cowboy. And of course it would not have been a party without paying tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

Darren Benbow met Lisa Brown after high school graduation, at a gathering of their friends in Long Island, New York. Immediately, Darren knew that there was something about Lisa that he had to get to know, so they exchanged phone numbers. Shortly after they started to date, Lisa moved from New York to North Carolina with her family to attend college. In many cases, a drastic move such as theirs would have lead to a bitter end; however, this was not the case. The move actually strengthened the couple’s relationship and lead to the fairytale ending most people only dream of.

Five years later, life started leading them in two different directions. Lisa made a move to Maryland, and Darren was still in New York pursuing a career in music, as a Motown Records recording artist. A big argument between the couple led Lisa to write a letter to Darren, which he never responded to. A few years passed and Darren moved to Atlanta and a desire to reconnect with Lisa was overdue. With a common name, such as Lisa Brown, his search proved to be harder than he ever could have imagined. He spent money on Classmates.com, US Search, and People Finder, but the results led to nothing. After years of profile searches, reckless emails, and chance meetings with her old friends, it seemed the search was leading to a dead end.

One day, Darren received an anonymous email in his MySpace inbox from a girl who claimed he dated her sister years ago. Forgetting she had a younger sister, he continued to correspond with the girl until realizing it was Lisa’s younger sister. She went on to tell him that Lisa had relocated to Atlanta as well, and lived 20 minutes from where he was.

Darren and Lisa reconnected the same night they spoke, and it seemed as though they picked up exactly where they left off. He always said that if he found her again, he would never let her go. Believe it or not, two years later they were married at Villa Serena.

There are many thoughts and theories regarding the ideals and principals of "Good Coaching". "Good Coaching" is simply placing your athletes in the best possible position for them and the team to succeed. This is most evident when coaching speed and agility. In order to become faster you must practice running with proper technique at high speeds. Learning how to relax and positioning your body properly while sprinting is the key to the equation: Stride Length X Stride Frequency= SPEED. Whether developing acceleration or during top speed training, mechanics must be critiqued daily. Speed enhancement takes a strong work ethic and practice but can be mastered with Premier Coaching - www.premier1sports.com. Developing speed is a skill that can be learned and taught by everyone.

Whether speed training youth or professionals, athletes must first learn how to use their arms. Proper arm swing is the most important aspect of speed development because they essentially control the body while sprinting. Arms will help stabilize the core and allow athletes to create a faster stride frequency and longer stride length. Arms should always be thrown in a linear motion and never across the mid-point of the body. Hands must remain relaxed and brought up underneath the chin. Athletes have to teach their body what it feels like to have an aggressive yet smooth arm swing. It is important that arms are positioned at a 90 degree angle and then opened to no further that 120 degree's when thrown down and back past the hip. Throwing the hand past the hip will enable the heel to gain maximal height so that the athlete can utilize the step-over technique (Which will be explained in part 2).

Teaching your body how to train with high intensity is a skill that takes repetition and patience to master. What Makes a Healthy Relationship?

Hopefully, you and your significant other are treating each other well. Not sure if that's the case? Take a step back from the dizzying sensation of being swept off your feet and think about whether your relationship has some of these qualities:

Do not expect anyone to be responsible for your happiness. Accept yourself. Respect yourself. Love yourself first. Take good care of yourself. If you really want, you CAN always find something to do that makes you feel good about yourself right now. Love yourself, so pursue your true needs. Light up your true desires. Ask yourself why you didn't? Too often relationships fail because someone is unhappy and blames their partner for making them that way. Your life is ONLY under your control. Keep reminding yourself you are good enough to have a happy life and a healthy relationship. Make yourself happy, and then share with one another.
Make and keep clear agreements. Respect the difference between yourself and your partner. Don't expect he or she agrees with you on everything. Reach mutual agreement or plan, and then commit to it. Leave the partner if you can't reach any agreement or you find he or she always makes excuses for breaking the agreement or plan. If you say you're going to meet your partner at noon, be on time, or call if you're going to be late. If you agree to have a monogamous relationship, keep that agreement and/or tell the truth about any feelings you're having about someone else before you act on them. Keeping agreements shows respect for yourself and your partner, as well as creating a sense of trust and safety.
Use communication to establish a common ground to understand different points of view and to create a mutual, collaborative agreement or plan. You can either choose to be right, or you can have a successful relationship. You can't always have both. Most people argue to be "right" about something. They say. "If you loved me, you would..." and argue to hear the other say, "Okay, you're right." If you are generally more interested in being right, this approach will not create a healthy relationship. Having a healthy relationship means that you have your experience, and your partner has his or her experience, and you learn to love and share and learn from those experiences. If you can't reach any mutual agreement, that doesn't mean either of you is wrong or bad, it only means you don't suit each other.
Approach your relationship as a learning experience. Each one has important information for you to learn. For example, do you often feel 'bossed' around in your relationship, or do you feel powerless? When a relationship is not working, there is usually a familiar way that we feel while in it. We are attracted to the partner with whom we can learn the most, and sometimes the lesson is to let go of a relationship that no longer serves us. A truly healthy relationship will consist of both partners who are interested in learning and expanding a relationship so that it continues to improve.
Tell the unarguable truth. Be truthful to yourself and your partner if you want true love. Many people are taught to lie to protect someone's feelings, either their own or those of their partner. Lies create disconnection between you and your relationship, even if your partner never finds out about it. The unarguable truth is about your true feelings; your partner can argue about anything that happens outside of you, but he or she cannot rationally deny your feelings. Here are some examples: "I felt scared when I saw you talking to him at the party," "I feel angry when you hang up on me," and "I felt sad when you walked out during our fight and didn't want to be around me."

“Why don’t you come to bed,” my husband asked. “I’m not sleepy,” I responded. A few minutes later, came the same question with an agitated tone. “Why don’t you just come to bed?” “I told you, I’m not sleepy”, I snapped back! About 15 minutes later, he insisted, “Michael-Renee, just come to bed!” I yelled back, frustrated, “What part of ‘I’m not sleepy’ do you not understand?” “You don’t have to sleep. Let’s just snuggle,” he said. “How are we going to snuggle when you are going to sleep? That’s not snuggling. That’s me holding you while you sleep and I lay there awake looking at the ceiling and I don’t want to do that! You’re not my father! I’ll come to bed when I am sleepy!”

OUCH! What an insensitive response to the man that I claim to love with every ounce of my being. Did I totally miss the point of that whole dialogue or what? My husband and I did not speak for almost two days after that exchange. He was hurt and I was angry. So, what happened? Miscommunication – that’s what happened. We lost two days of “togetherness” because we didn’t take ten minutes to try to understand what we were each trying to communicate.

So, let’s break it down. What my husband really wanted was “cuddle time”. All I heard was “come to bed.” I am very concrete, meaning I have trouble “reading between the lines.” He did not clearly state his need and I did not ask for clarification. I was too busy being defiant, controlling, and selfish. So, I missed an opportunity to be close to my husband “just because” and he missed getting his need for some quality time and physical touch met. We both lost in this senseless argument because we did not stop to find out what was really being communicated.

Communication is a learned behavior. We learn how to communicate as children by watching those around us. As adults, our communication is affected by more societal influences – what we think is hip or cool, what is politically correct, what is socially acceptable, etc. Communication is complex. It consists of words, body language, intonation, and emotion. When all facets are congruent, a powerful message can be generated. For example, “I love you” - whispered with soft passion, while maintaining direct eye contact, and holding hands – feels genuine. When some facets are incongruent, meaning they do not match, then the message not only loses its power, but may become incredulous. For example, “I love you” – mumbled under the breath with crossed arms and a frown – feels quite disingenuous and may not be perceived as true.

Communication, not sex, is what gets couples through relationship situations. When there are financial problems, communication helps find a solution. When there are intimacy problems, communication can help spark new passion. When there are parenting problems, communication can help develop a unified strategy. When there are communication problems, there is silence. Nothing gets solved. No growth happens. For couples who seem to be speaking different languages to each other, I recommend reading The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman. Our love language is what makes us feel loved. Once you learn each other’s love languages – quality time, words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving of gifts, and physical touch – you will have a new understanding of how to better communicate your love to one another.

Let’s talk about words. We all know words can evoke different emotions. They can bring smiles and they can bring tears depending on what the words are, when they are used, and how they are said. Words can cut like a knife and they soothe the deepest hurt. So, be very careful about the words you choose to use with each other. Once they have left your mouth, you cannot take them back. So, be kind to one another and think before you speak.

What about your body language? Folded arms communicate that a barrier is up between you and you will only get so close. Eye contact communicates interest and integrity. When someone cannot look you in the eyes, it does not necessarily mean that they are not telling you the truth. Eye contact has a cultural background. There are some cultures that believe that making direct eye contact communicates a direct challenge of authority and is very offensive. Other cultures believe that women should not make eye contact with men. Another reason someone may not make eye contact initially is out of shame. Now, if there is no cultural difference and no shame associated with the discussion and there is still no eye contact, then you may want to question the level of honesty. When someone is really listening to you, there is usually eye contact and they will probably be leaning toward you. You know indifference when you see it. In the South, we like to reach out and touch people when we talk – this communicates concern or affection.

Intonation is hard to write about. It is simply how you sound to the other person. I get told a lot that I am abrasive. I have a very loud voice and I can be very short. I am the kind of person who says what I mean and don’t add a lot of fluff. So, to people who do not care for my directness, it seems abrasive. So, I have had to work on my tone. A lot of strong, black women I have talked to seem to get this same feedback. So, my best suggestion to you, when it comes to intonation, is to ask for feedback. How do people hear you? What do you sound like when you talk? Be open to what people tell you and remember that their perception is 100% of their reality. Soften your tone if needed. Don’t be condescending. Those are the two biggest complaints about tone.

Your emotions may affect your tone. When we are depressed, our tone can be very flat – completely lacking emotion as if we don’t care. Anger, joy, and sadness can be heard in our tone as well. Unfortunately, though, fear and hurt can sometimes be mistaken for anger when we are listening to tone. So, again, be careful to look at the whole communication picture. What is the discussion about? What happened to provoke the conversation? What emotion would you have if the shoe was on the other foot? Try to understand the emotions behind the tone if you get confused or feel yourself becoming defensive.

Lastly, learn to listen effectively. You can talk until you are blue in the face and your partner may not really hear you. When your partner needs to have a serious discussion with you, stop what you are doing and give [him or her] your undivided attention. Face each other when you talk. If you are taller than your partner, sit down so that you can be at eye level with each other. After a few minutes, stop and make sure that you have heard [him or her] correctly. Simply, say, “What I heard you saying was……….” and explain in your own words what you heard your partner say. Then, allow your partner to answer, either, “Yes, that’s correct” or “No, what I was trying to say was……..” allowing them to rephrase what they said so you might understand better. Then, continue your conversation back and forth. Take moments throughout your conversation to check in with each other and make sure that you are hearing each other correctly. This will stop any misunderstandings before they start to fester.

Remember that communication can make or break your relationship. You will not always agree on everything. However, if you fight fair and are kind to each other, you can talk about anything and work it out. Fighting fair means no name calling, no cheap shots, no degradation, no throwing up the past, and no lying. Choose words that you will not regret. Use your words to uplift each other. Don’t use them as a weapon.

TRUST

If you look in the dictionary, you will see the following definitions of the word TRUST:
1. reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc., of a person or thing; confidence.
2. confident expectation of something; hope.
3. the obligation or responsibility imposed on a person in whom confidence or authority is placed: a position of trust.
4. something committed or entrusted to one’s care for use or safekeeping, as an office, duty, or the like; responsibility; charge. www.dictionary.com, 7/19/08

The common threads to all these definitions are confidence, responsibility, and care. A husband and wife rely on each other’s integrity, strength, and ability. A husband and wife have confident expectations of one another. We have an obligation and a responsibility to love, care for, and respect each other as husband and wife. Our hearts, bodies, minds, and souls are committed and entrusted to one another “until death do us part.” One might assume that since you have agreed to marry each other, that you trust each other. Unfortunately, this is not always a correct assumption. Many times we give “lip service” to trusting each other, but then do not completely give that trust. Trust is the foundation of any relationship – parent-child, boyfriend-girlfriend, friend-friend, employer-employee, and husband-wife. Without trust, your marriage has very little opportunity for growth.

According to Erik Erikson, “trust versus mistrust” is the very first stage of personality development. Trust is developed before the age of two. Erikson believed that trust in the infant years created a lifelong expectation of what we believed about the world. Our parents had the ability to write on our souls, as infants and children, and influence who we are as people. Did yours write something good or not? What did you learn about trust as a child? Did you learn that married people cheat on each other? Did you learn that when you share your feelings they are used against you later? Did you learn that you would be understood when you shared your feelings? Did you learn that feelings, like anger and sadness, caused fights and/or divorce? Did you learn to trust the opposite sex? Did you learn trust once you started dating? Were your boundaries respected or ignored? Were you taken advantage of? Were secrets, that you thought were private, shared with outsiders? As an adult, have you learned to trust? Are you willing to share your deepest, darkest secret with your spouse knowing that it will always be a secret and will never be used against you? Or do you censor what you share because you are not sure? If I asked you to fall backward into your spouse’s arms, would you trust him or her to catch you?

Trust is earned with consistency. Trust is not given simply because you think you love someone. How can you actually love someone that you do not trust? Hopefully, the two of you have been together long enough to have established a pattern of consistency and earned each other’s trust. If not, start now. Can you depend on your spouse to tell the truth, to be faithful, to listen effectively, to put the top back on the toothpaste – ALL THE TIME? Of course not, nobody’s perfect. MOST OF THE TIME would demonstrate consistency, though. Does he or she do just the opposite of what you expect or do something one time and not the other? That inconsistency breeds fear and mistrust. There are several reasons that men and women may be distrusting.

A lot of women have different trust issues related to their fathers, abuse, the “independent woman syndrome”, and infidelity. A little girl’s father is her first model of what a man is supposed to be and how he is supposed to treat her. If that relationship was a loving, nurturing one, then a woman may have a very solid idea of how to trust a man to care for her. If her father was not in the picture at all, her father left, or her father was physically present but emotionally unavailable, she may not be sure that a man can love her and take care of her. Abuse, whether physical, emotional, or sexual, can destroy a woman’s trust for a very long time. When one man (or multiple men) has taken advantage of them, women are less apt to trust men to respect and love them. If they have been deeply wounded once before by a man they trusted, they may be a lot more protective of their feelings. With the “independent woman syndrome” there is a feeling of: I am the only one who can take care of me. When you have learned to do for yourself and can depend on that, why entrust that security to someone else? Infidelity causes months, maybe years of doubt. There is no explanation for cheating that can make a woman feel better. From the moment she finds out until whenever, she will wonder if you are where you say you are and if you are really with who you say you’re with. She will question phone calls, working late, financial transactions, and even your tie choice. She will NOT be willing to give intimacy during this struggle because she no longer trusts you to respect her, protect her, and love her the way she deserves to be loved. She may doubt her self-worth and her value to you. You will have to EARN that trust back and it will not be easy.

A lot of men have some of the same issues. Because men tend to be more logical than emotional, you might think that their feelings don’t run as deep. That is a myth. Men tend to love from their head first and then to their heart. They make a conscious decision a lot of times to allow someone in their heart and love them. Therefore, when men truly love, their love can run very deep. When a man has decided to entrust his heart to a woman and he gets hurt; it can be very difficult for him to open up and trust again. A man’s relationship with his mother allows him to model how to care for a woman. However, his relationship with his father teaches him how to be a man. If the father was a good role model (i.e. loving, faithful, honest, hard-working, etc.), then a man may develop a good sense of self. If the father was not a god role model (i.e. abusive, unfaithful, dishonest, lazy, etc.), then the man may not develop such a good sense of self. Abuse, whether physical, emotional, or sexual, can make a man question his manhood, his sexuality, his self-worth, and his ability to protect [himself and anyone else depending on him]. When this abuse is inflicted by a woman, he may have a very difficult time ever trusting women – even the one he is going to marry. Infidelity is taken as a personal affront and comes with a lot of hurt and pain. A man may question his decision about choosing to love and choosing to trust his spouse. He may question his value or lack thereof. It will take a very long time for him to trust again because he will go back in to their head and start over again. The journey back to his heart will be even longer after a betrayal like that.

Lack of trust can be seen in many different ways. When you hide money from each other, you don’t trust. You don’t trust your spouse to be responsible with your money. When you don’t allow your spouse to parent your children, you don’t trust. You don’t trust your spouse to be a good parent. When you lie to each other, you don’t trust. You don’t trust your partner to handle the truth, whatever that truth is. When you don’t tell your spouse when something feels good or hurts during sex, you don’t trust. You don’t trust your spouse to make the necessary adjustments to lovingly meet your needs. When you make a major decision without your partners input, you don’t trust. You don’t trust your partner’s opinion. When you check your partner’s wallet/purse, cell phone, car, e-mail account, etc., you don’t trust. You don’t trust your spouse to be faithful. When you are having a major emotion – happiness, sadness, anger, confusion, whatever – and you don’t feel like you can share it with your partner, you don’t trust. You don’t trust your spouse to validate, appreciate, and soothe your emotions. When you don’t feel comfortable being naked in front of your spouse, you don’t trust. You don’t trust your partner to love you just the way you are. When you do or say something that you would not do or say in front of your spouse, you don’t trust. You don’t trust your spouse’s reaction to whatever you are doing or saying – maybe because it will be hurtful to them or maybe because it will keep you from getting what you want.

So, how do you trust? First, if you have difficulty trusting, you must admit it to yourself, then to your spouse, then to your counselor. That’s right, your counselor. You will need an objective third party to help you work through your struggle and help you find healing. No matter what the problem is – dysfunctional childhood, abuse, infidelity, etc. – a counselor can help you sort through the emotions and really heal the wounds rather than just continuing to put a band-aid on your problems. Once you can deal with the true depth of your distrust – where it stems from and how it affects you – you can close that chapter in your life and open yourself to new beginnings. Second, you need to talk about your distrust with each other – openly and honestly. Third, you need to agree to accept each other where you are in your struggle and support each other while you grow. Fourth, make a conscious effort to do whatever each other needs to help build trust (e.g. checking in by phone at specified times, having a “safe” word during sex to stop uncomfortable sexual activity, creating intimacy without sex, sharing bank records, etc.). Lastly, be patient with each other, honor each other’s commitment to facing this problem, and celebrate each new level of trust and depth you develop together.

Imagine the new depth you will have in your marriage when you can trust your partner unconditionally. What would it feel like to be able to share anything and everything with your spouse without fear of retribution? What would it feel like to be able to share your hurts and pain, your fantasies and desires with your partner and know that you would be heard, understood, and not judged? How freeing would it be to find safety and security in the one person that you have vowed to spend the rest of your life with? Be careful with each other and take your time. Most importantly, be wise. If you realize that the person you are with is not trustworthy, does not value you and your feelings, or is hurtful without remorse, then you may not want to open yourself up too much. You know what’s comfortable for you. If the two of you are in this together, however, you must be willing to step outside your comfort zone and push for new emotional breakthroughs. The new you and your new relationship will be incredible. Trust me.

WEDDING AND MARRIAGE - REALITY CHECK

So, you have made one of the biggest decisions of your life. Someone proposed and someone said, “Yes.” But, to what did you say yes? Was it yes to a lifetime of fun and joy and romance like in a Harlequin romance novel? Was it yes to a business arrangement? Was it yes to a lifetime of work and struggle? Was it yes to sacrificing who you are as an individual and no longer having a sense of self? Was it yes to a biblical union that will be absolutely perfect in the sight of God? Was it yes, finally, to commitment? The answer is a quintessential, NO! You did not agree to any one of these things; but rather to all of them. Was it yes to a fantasy or someone’s potential rather than reality? Let’s hope not. What you have both agreed to is being married – not to a wedding and not to a honeymoon – but to the covenant of marriage.

After the ceremony, the reception and the honeymoon, you will come home to the real world and you will be husband and wife. You will forever have the joy of the beautiful memories captured in your wedding album and your wedding video by Visual Statements Photography and Video. You will have great memories from your honeymoon. You have begun forever! So, what happens now?

A lot of couples are disillusioned from the start. Their entire focus is on the wedding, and not on the marriage. Although the wedding is an important event, the wedding is only one day. The marriage is for a lifetime. Unfortunately, some couples do not take the time to figure out what is going to happen after the wedding day. There are several tough questions that need to be discussed before the two of you say, “I do.” Communication, trust, finances, sex, and [lack of] covenant are the five topics that tend to destroy marriages today. In 2008, although the statistics have not gotten much worse, the general consensus still seems to be that it is easier to just get divorced than try to stay married. I challenge all new couples to dare to stay together. It is one of the hardest, yet most rewarding jobs you will ever have. If you can put forty hours a week into a corporate job, you can certainly put that amount of time or more into your marriage. The truth is: we make time for what is truly important to us. So, how does your list of priorities run?

Better yet, do your lists match, complement, or antagonize each other? Do you communicate your needs? Do you trust your partner to meet your needs? Do you know how each of you handles finances? Do you have the same sexual expectations? Have you asked the hard questions? Are you willing to accept the answers? Thus begins your communication.
Communication is multi-faceted: problem identification, talking, listening, understanding, and resolving. Communication is not a naturally assumed behavior. It is a learned skill. As a couple, you must identify the problem, talk about it, and come to a resolution. No one can be held accountable for something they do not know (e.g. you get pissed off when they leave the toilet seat up or when they leave hair in the sink after blow-drying it). So, identify your needs honestly and respectfully and then talk about how to get your needs met. Check to make sure that your partner understands what you are saying. If they do not, simply rephrase it so they will. Discuss it calmly, agree on a resolution, or agree to disagree. DO NOT EVER GO TO BED ANGRY! Then, trust that your new spouse will implement the actions you agreed upon to make sure your needs get met.

Trust is the foundation of any relationship. Trust can be destroyed before you even get married. If someone was raped, molested, or abused (mentally, physically, or emotionally), trust is going to be a huge issue in your relationship. Has this happened to you or your partner? Do you know? Do you trust each other enough to share that information? The other trust destroyer is infidelity. Has one of you been unfaithful? Have you dealt with all the emotions of that incredible betrayal? It is possible to get past infidelity; but only with a great deal of professional help, commitment, forgiveness, and prayer. If you begin your marriage with a shaky foundation, you are setting yourself up for failure. Remember, you are agreeing to commit your heart, mind, body and money to this person forever.

So, are you ready for a joint checking account? Who makes more? Who is the better money manager? Is one of you a spender and one a saver? Do you spend money the same way? Have you agreed to keep separate checking accounts? Who is responsible for which bills or do the bills get paid out of a joint account? Is there a spending limit at which you must ask the other person for permission? What is the retirement goal? If you are both homeowners, whose house will be sold? If one person is a homeowner, is the other person comfortable moving in or do you want to get a house together? What is the timeline for that? What is each person’s credit score? Have you talked about these things? If your partner has an expensive hobby, are you willing to include this in the monthly budget? Does one of you pay bills early and the other floats checks to rob Peter to pay Paul? These are things you need to know prior to marriage and it is one of the hardest conversations you may have to have, next to the sex discussion.

Sex tends to freak people out, believe it or not. Sexual relations require a level of intimacy that we are not all ready to share. Have you been having sex with each other all the while you have been dating? Are you waiting until marriage? Have you taken a vow of celibacy? Is someone in your relationship a virgin? Has someone been violated? Do you know how to be intimate without intercourse? Is sex used as a weapon in your relationship? Have you discussed with each other your sexual histories? Has there been homosexual activity, drug use, blood transfusions, multiple partners, or unprotected sex? What is your partner’s STD history and current HIV status? Did they tell you or did you see the results on paper?

In 2008, over 30% of HIV is spread from unprotected heterosexual contact. It is something that, unfortunately, we still have to talk about. Beyond that, though, how often are you going to have sex? Does one person think every day, four times a day is normal while the other person thinks four times a month is normal? A difference like that could cause a huge problem. You may want to figure out what each person’s expectations are now, before the wedding and the honeymoon. What is going to happen when one of you is sick or unable to perform sexually? Is the other person willing to wait or will oral sex or manual stimulation be offered as an alternative? Remember that God expects you to be servant lovers to one another. It is part of the covenant of marriage.

A covenant is much deeper than a commitment. You commit to a contract, a job, a schedule. A commitment is legal (i.e. ordered by a judge). A covenant is a vow or agreement made between God and His people. So, as much as you have agreed to get married, I hope you have considered the depth of the covenant you are making. You are vowing to love, honor, respect, and protect each other in the sight of God and in the sight of each other. If this contract is broken, there will be much more than financial loss; there will be emotional and spiritual devastation as well. God is omnipotent. He has given us direction in His word as to how we are to be as husbands and wives. He has given us direction as to how to be servant lovers to one another. He has made it easy. The challenge for us humans is to step up and be the men and women, husbands and wives, fathers and mothers that He has created us to be.

So, as you get ready for your big day, get ready for the days after. Commit to yourself that you will wake up every morning and ask yourself this question, “What can I do today to make my husband’s or wife’s life better today?” Whatever you did when you were dating to win each other’s hearts, keep doing it. Don’t get complacent and don’t take each other for granted. Don’t assume that your spouse knows you love him or her. We all like to hear it from time to time. Look into each other’s eyes for one minute every day and read each other’s souls. Cherish every moment you share together – every smile, laugh, touch, and tear. Share your dreams and your goals. Kiss every day. Say “good morning”, “hello”, “goodbye”, “goodnight”, “I’m sorry” and “I love you” whenever you have the chance because tomorrow is not promised to any of us. Thank God for every day you get to love your spouse and to feel loved in return. It is the greatest gift any of us can experience. Make it awesome every day of the rest of your life together!

Tyler Fantasy Wedding

Maurice and Penny met one evening while out having dinner and drinks with friends. Their eyes met across a crowded room, and Maurice eventually sent a waitress over to get Penny’s drink order.

Penny was having a diet coke; however Maurice refused to buy her a coke, and insisted that Penny have a glass of wine. Maurice and his friend walked over and introduced themselves shortly thereafter. Maurice and Penny sat as a group and talked and laughed for hours.

Penny was so intrigued, by Maurice’s honesty and character, that Penny jokingly told Maurice that night, 'If I ever get married again, I want my husband to be just like you'. Never in a million years did she really think that the stranger sitting across the table from her would eventually become the man that she would fall so deeply in love with and marry.

Maurice and Penny wanted a very romantic, fairytale wedding and Endless Summer Villa gave us that and so much more. Once they decided on a destination wedding, they wanted a villa that would set the mood for the whole week. Maurice is a romantic, and they knew that the place they chose would definitely need to convey that romance. The name, Endless Summer, of the villa says it all. Their week was like an Endless Summer romance. Although they didn't think it was possible, they fell in love all over again.

Maurice Tyler - Graduate of Morgan State University, Retired from (NFL) National Football League with his longest career being with the Denver Broncos. He is currently employed as a Health and Physical Education Teacher in Atlanta, GA and an Assistant Football Coach for the Atlanta Explosion. The couple resides in Ellenwood, Georgia suburbs of Atlanta.

Think Pink Photography was founded in October 2007 to support individuals and their families who have been touched by breast cancer. It is a non-profit organization that serves two main purposes - celebrating life and supporting the cause.

The Think Pink Photography network helps breast cancer survivors and their supporters to celebrate life with charitable photography sessions. Sessions are available to document the fight before or during treatment or to celebrate the victory when treatment is completed. Selissa and Charles planned their wedding on a private and remote island called Dafuskie Island. When we say private and remote, we mean a trip to South Carolina, a 45 minute boat ride and then a 15 minute bus ride to the resort where the wedding would be held. We must admit it was all worth it in the end!!!
